Subject: Traveler and the iPhone Configuration Utility
Feedback Type: Question
Product Area: Notes Traveler
Technical Area: Administration
Platform: iPhone
Release: 8.5.2
Reproducible: Not applicable
We are testing the deployment of iPads with Traveler. I understand that with Traveler we can set some basic security settings like password and disable camera. However, from our research it seems that we should consider an MDM solution if we want to manage a large number of devices. So, we’ve been reviewing MDM solutions and most say that they work with Traveler, even though Traveler and an MDM can run separate from each other. If we choose an MDM then we would have to have the users (or lab) provision devices for Traveler by navigating to the Traveler web site and authenticating. Then do the same for the MDM to allow the device to be managed by the MDM.
I am looking to simplify the provisioning of a device by providing a single web address to pull down the MDM profile and the Traveler profile. All of the MDM’s seem to have access to the features contained within the iPhone Configuration Utility. The profiles contain some of the same settings that the Traveler can deploy, like password, and disable camera. But they can also allow us to set setup VPN and WiFi Settings. Outside of the scope of provisioning Lotus Traveler I can successfully create these profiles with the iPhone Configuration Utility and then deploy these settings via email. They show up as a single profile. When viewing my Profiles on my iPad I also see another profile contains my Traveler settings.
From reviewing the iPhone Configuration Utility documentation and Traveler documentation I get the impression that I can use the section labeled Exchange ActiveSync to specify the Traveler server settings.
Exchange ActiveSync Host: [http://traveler_server/servlet/traveler]
Use SSL [checked by default]
Domain: [leave blank?]
User:[user friendly name or email address?]
Email Address: [full SMTP email address]
Password: [leave blank-expecting the user to be prompted]
Has anyone successfully specified the Traveler server within the iPhone Configuration Utility? Do I have the above settings correct? Or am I missing something? Is there a reason I would NOT want to do this?
Thank you
